So I was looking on the internet a couple of days ago and I ran across this comic.
I thought it was kind of interesting and so I tried to find out if it had a website, and just my luck it did! (www.safcomic.com) I began looking around the website and reading the comics and started to think about what they were really saying. One of the things that bothered me the most was that the author of Single Asian Female is not a female but rather a man. The website claims that the purpose of the comic strip is to “facilitate discussion and raise awareness about historical and contemporary issues in the Asian American community.” However, I can’t really understand how a man can really properly express the feelings of his female counterparts. The author on the other hand justifies what he does by saying he runs all of his strips by an advisory panel of 10 Asian American women and men from all different backgrounds before publishing them. I thought this statement was interesting seeing as how the author is trying to push awareness about Asian American women, but at the same time he is falling back on a somewhat racially ignorant statement. Kind of like when people cite their “colored” friends in an attempt to fight charges of racism, he is citing the Asian females as a way of showing that his comic is really o.k. After looking at a bunch of the comics on the page I found myself to be kind of stuck in the middle and not knowing what to think. Is the author really doing a good job facilitating discussion about issues regarding Asian American women or is he doing something else? All of the press on the website for the comic is positive(why would they put up anything else) but while searching the internet I found quite a few Asian American women who seemed to be upset by it. I am not really sure what I think about it as of yet and I invite you all to take a look at the comics on the website and tell me what you think.

I think that Mr. Ethan Lee is funny guy. I admit that i can see a certain degree of truth in wha the says - all of my Japanese-American aunts married white men - BUT, does he ever do comics from the perspective of an Asian man? It is not like only Asian-american women spurn Asian men. For instance, keeping it in the family, all of my Japanese-American male relatives married white women. It is not as though women are the only ones refusing to date within their race. I think that Mr. Lee is a bitter man. The panel of 10 Asian American women is a facade! Some Asian-American chick probably turned him down for the prom back in the day and this is how he expresses his grudge.
Great find! I went to the site and read all the comics he has up. I really enjoyed the one where the white guy is asking her "what are you?" Oh my.

That just sounds so familiar, because I have actually heard conversations along these lines, and am probably guilty of asking these kinds of questions. I enjoy his comics for the most part, but I also think it is odd, the protaganist he chooses, and his message that he is trying to raise awareness and facilitate discussion. Great for him, but I feel this is an unusual way to do so.
I don't believe that asking "what is your ethnic background" is necessarily a bad idea. Many people in the US have ethnic backgrounds, and it can become interesting when you discuss them.
You don't want to make the other person feel like an outsider, though. I wish Ethan Lee illustrated the distinction.
After getting married in 2001, I and James my (husband) began trying to conceive. "When we first started trying, I was obsessive and bought many pregnancy tests even if I knew my period was coming. "We probably spent hundreds of dollars on tests. We viewed making love as work, and it took the pleasure and enjoyment out of it." Eventually we went to a specialist and discovered that James had a low sperm count, so we faced the possibility that we may never have children. "I was at the point that I didn't even want to get out of bed some days. I was so depressed. The Positive: I had a moment of clarity. "I just kept telling myself that when the time was right we would get pregnant. It’s hard, I later order for Priest Eka herbal medication meant for pregnant women to cook as soup and be eating it and much to us was surprise; I got pregnant a few months after getting used of the medication. When you are trying, just ordered for priest Eka herbal medication. Daughter Natalie was born in September 2003.
